Conversation with a hostel receptionist in Lisbon made me rethink packing light

Last month I was staying at a 12-bed dorm in Lisbon and this receptionist told me she never packs more than a 4kg carry-on, even for 3 week trips, and she showed me her rolling trick with a compression cube and a trash bag. It hit different because I always assumed layering and doing laundry was the only way to save on baggage fees, but she pointed out that most budget airlines in Europe charge more for the overhead bin than the seat itself. Has anyone here actually done a sub-5kg trip for a longer stay, and what's the one item you'd never drop to make it work?
