Compared hostels vs Airbnbs for a 2 week trip to Portugal and the winner was clear
Spent a week in hostels in Lisbon for 25 euros a night and then a week in Airbnbs in Porto for 60 euros a night. The hostels had free walking tours and breakfast included, plus I met 5 other solo travelers to split dinner costs with. The Airbnbs were quieter but I spent way more on food and had zero social life. Anyone else find hostels beat private rentals for saving money when traveling solo?

Did the free hostel breakfast actually save you enough to notice?

Flip it around and look at the real cost. Hostel breakfasts are usually just toast and jam, and you still end up buying lunch because you're hungry by noon. Add in the price of a few drinks at the hostel bar or paying for a locker and you're probably spending closer to 35-40 euros a night anyway.
