Appreciation post: The guy in a Budapest hostel who taught me to use the local bakery's day-old bread bin
He saw me buying a full-price loaf, shook his head, and said, 'You're paying for yesterday's air, go around back after 6pm and get it for 50 forints,' which saved me about a dollar fifty and got me the best cheap breakfast for a week, so what's your best 'ask a local' food hack?

Wait, you were gonna pay full price for stale bread? That's wild. My best tip is from Lisbon, where a fisherman told me to skip the fancy places and just point at whatever the old guys are eating at the pastelaria counter. Got a massive bowl of fish stew for like three euros.

skip the fancy places" works for some stuff but honestly i've had some amazing meals at nicer spots too. sometimes paying a bit more is worth it for the whole experience.

Keith's Lisbon tip is solid. I once paid twenty bucks for a tiny plate of pasta in Rome because the place looked nice. Tasted like sadness and credit card debt. Meanwhile the best meal I had there was a slice of pizza from a hole in the wall, eaten standing up. You learn the hard way to follow the locals.
