Am I the only one who got burned by that 'stay with locals' advice?
My cousin swore I'd save big by booking a room through a homestay app in Barcelona, but the host canceled the day I arrived and I ended up paying double for a last minute hostel, so has anyone else had that backfire on them?

emerycarr is right, it's way more common than people talk about. My friend tried that in Rome and got canceled on a week before, ended up in a sketchy place near the train station. The app didn't even help her find a backup, just gave a refund and that was it. It's a gamble every time you book with a stranger like that.
