Airbnb got weird after I stayed that week in Portland

Back in 2018 I rented a room for $38 a night in Portland and the host gave me a bus pass and a list of free food spots. Now the same kind of place goes for $90 with a cleaning fee that stings worse than the rent. Anyone else notice the charm just got priced out?

Wait, @kelly.daniel, they actually asked you to strip the beds and take out the trash after paying a $75 cleaning fee? That's wild, I would have been so annoyed.

I used to roll my eyes at people complaining about Airbnb fees, figured they were just being cheap. But your line about the cleaning fee stinging worse than the rent really hit home. I booked a place in Nashville last fall that was $85 a night plus a $75 cleaning fee, and when I got there the host asked me to strip the beds and take out the trash. Felt like I was paying extra to do their job. Makes me miss the old days when it was just someone's spare couch and a handshake.
