Wasted $22 at a Chicago grocery store on "manager's special" produce, lesson learned
Saw a big bag of bell peppers and tomatoes marked down to $3 each at the store on Diversey last week, grabbed four bags thinking I scored. Got them home and two days later everything was mushy and fuzzy, had to toss about $16 worth straight into the trash. Should've just bought the loose ones I could actually squeeze instead of trusting the plastic wrap. Anyone else get burned by those discount produce bags or is it just me being cheap?
Walked right into the same trap myself last month at the Jewel on Ashland. Bought one of those pre-wrapped bags of zucchini and squash because it was marked down to two bucks and looked fine through the plastic. Got it home and the middle ones were already soft and leaking, the wrap just hides the bad spots so you can't tell until you open it. Here's my question though, were those bags sitting out on a regular shelf or did they have them in a cooler somewhere? Because if they were just stacked on a display near the front of the store, that's on them for not keeping them cold, and you might be able to say something. Did you happen to notice the sell-by date on the twist tie or the sticker before you tossed everything?
