Vent: The day I realized I was wasting good money on pre-ground pepper

I always bought those little pepper grinders at the grocery store because they were cheap and easy. But last month I was making a big batch of chili for a church potluck and went through three of them. My neighbor Betty saw me and asked why I didn't just buy whole peppercorns and a reusable grinder. I did the math and I was spending about $6 a month on those disposable ones. That's $72 a year for something I could get for a one-time $10 grinder and $3 bags of peppercorns. Has anyone else had a similar wake-up call about a kitchen staple they were overspending on?

Oh man, this hits home because I just realized I've been the human equivalent of a fancy pepper grinder for years. I spent a whole year buying those little jars of pre-ground black pepper because I thought it was "fancy" even though it's basically just dust at that point. Last week I actually caught myself shaking out a sad little sprinkle from an almost-empty jar and thinking "this tastes like nothing." Meanwhile I've got a $40 bag of whole peppercorns sitting in my pantry that I bought for a dinner party two years ago and never opened because I was too lazy to use my actual grinder. So basically I'm paying extra for the privilege of pretending I'm a gourmet cook while using the pepper equivalent of sand.

Wait, are you me? I literally just went through the exact same thing with vanilla extract.
