Tried making my own bread last week to save money and ended up burning 3 loaves

I figured I'd save like $5 a week baking my own, but my oven runs hot and I didn't test it first. First loaf came out black on the bottom, second was doughy inside, third was edible but hard as a rock. Learned the hard way that a cheap oven thermometer costs $6 and saves a lot of waste. Anyone else have a baking fail that cost more than just buying the bread?

Bro that's the story of my life honestly. Every time I try to DIY something to save a few bucks I end up spending more in the long run. I tried fixing a leaky faucet once and ended up flooding my bathroom, had to call a plumber anyway and he charged double. It's like the universe punishes us for trying to be thrifty. At least with bread you can eat the hard loaf as croutons or something. Your oven thermometer tip is gold though, I bet half the people who bake have no clue their oven is lying to them.

Oh boy, you're not wrong there. I used to be one of those "just get a cheap oven and hope for the best" types, but after ruining three batches of cookies in a row I finally broke down and bought a thermometer. Turns out my oven runs 50 degrees hot, so now everything actually comes out right. It's funny how a simple ten dollar tool can save you from all that frustration and wasted ingredients.

Wait, you flooded your whole bathroom trying to fix ONE leaky faucet? That sounds like a nightmare, dude. At least my burnt bread didn't cause structural damage.
