TIL a single $3 bag of dried beans makes more meals than a $5 can of chili, and I had to learn that the hard way after 6 months of overspending at Aldi.
I finally did the math on my grocery receipts from the last quarter, and switching to dried beans alone saved me about $40 a month, has anyone else cut costs by ditching canned stuff?

Batch cooking is the way around that time problem. I’ll do a whole 2lb bag of pintos on my day off and freeze them in 2 cup portions, then they're basically as fast as opening a can for the next few weeks. Also figured out you don't actually have to soak beans overnight if you do a quick boil method, hour and a half total from dry to done if you bring em to a rolling boil for 2 minutes then let em sit covered for an hour before cooking. That $40 a month adds up to almost $500 a year which is a nice chunk of change for just planning a little ahead.

The time factor is the hidden cost nobody talks about with dried beans - you have to soak them overnight and then cook them for an hour or more. That $40 monthly savings is real but only if your schedule actually lets you plan meals ahead instead of grabbing convenience foods. Has the extra prep time been a problem for you or did you find ways to work around it?
