The beans vs. meat debate my grandma started at Thanksgiving

She swore dried beans could replace half the ground beef in chili to save money, but my uncle laughed and said beans just make it taste like a side dish. I'm still torn - who's right for feeding a family of four on $30 a week?

your uncle's wrong tbh. beans in chili are legit, they soak up all the spices and get that same texture as meat if you cook em right. i've been stretching ground beef with beans for years and nobody in my family even notices anymore. the trick is to mash some of the beans so it thickens the chili like meat would. plus you save like half the cost which is huge when you're feeding four people on a tight budget. your grandma knew what she was doing, trust the elder wisdom on this one.

Trust the elder wisdom" is right, my grandma did the same thing with lentil loaf and we never missed the meat. Once you mash half those beans into the chili it thickens up exactly like you said, no one notices.
