Spent two hours making a lentil soup that turned into a paste

I tried that cheap lentil soup recipe that's been floating around. Figured it would be a quick 30 minute dinner after work. Well, I didn't realize you gotta soak those lentils first. Threw them in dry and let it simmer for an hour. Came back to a pot of brown paste that stuck to the bottom like glue. Scraped it out and tried to salvage it with some broth but nope. Ended up ordering pizza for $18 anyway so much for saving money. Has anyone else destroyed a cheap meal by skipping a step?

Gotta admit I used to think soaking was just some old school step you could skip. Like how hard can it be, right? But after I turned a perfectly good batch of black beans into mush one time I totally changed my mind. Now I set a timer on my phone and everything just to remember. Your lentil paste story hits close to home, I feel your pain on that one.

Used to skip it myself but you totally convinced me otherwise.
