Remembering how my grandma's 'stone soup' night worked back in the day

Three years ago, she'd have everyone bring one cheap veggie, like a potato or an onion, to her house in Toledo. We'd throw it all in a big pot with some broth bones she saved, feeding our whole family for maybe ten bucks total. Does anyone still do a version of this with their friends?

Heard about a buddy of mine who tried this last winter when his furnace died and money got tight. He texted the group chat asking everyone to bring whatever was left in their fridge drawer. They ended up with a weird but good soup full of carrots, a lone parsnip, and like three kinds of beans. Said it was the warmest he felt all month, and not just from the soup.

Yeah, that's the real trick, isn't it? When my car died last year, I basically lived on "freezer surprise" for a week. Just threw every frozen veggie bag and mystery meat package into a big pot with some broth. It wasn't pretty, but it kept me fed. Honestly, the weird mixes sometimes turn out better than a planned meal. There's something about making it work with what you've got that feels like a win.

Sounds like a soup with a real identity crisis.
