PSA: My hostel kitchen disaster led to a super cheap pasta trick

I was traveling through Europe on a tight budget and staying in a hostel in Berlin. One night, I only had a few euros left for food, so I raided the shared kitchen for leftovers. I found some half-used onions, a sad-looking tomato, and a packet of pasta someone left behind. I cooked it all up with a bit of oil and some basic herbs from the spice rack. It turned into this really filling meal that cost almost nothing. Now I always look for cheap veggies and pantry staples when I cook at home. It saves me so much money compared to buying pre-made sauces. What's your go-to 'use whatever's left' meal when funds are low?

Yeah, that's the way to do it. My version is basically fried rice with the last bits from the fridge. Tastes fine and keeps the budget in check.

In a pinch, I've used ketchup for pasta sauce. Your mileage may vary.
