My uncle swore dried beans would cut my grocery bill in half, and he was way off
My uncle keeps telling everyone that dried beans instead of canned is the biggest money saver at the store. I finally tried it for a full month of dinners back in January. A 2 pound bag costs about $2.50 and gives you maybe 12 servings once cooked, which sounds great on paper. But I forgot to soak them one night, burned a whole pot another time, and my gas bill went up $18 from all the simmering. By the time I added up the wasted batches and the hours of planning, I was saving maybe $9 a month over canned. Anyone else run the real numbers on dried beans versus canned, or is it just me who kept messing up the soak timing?
