My uncle in Cleveland told me his 'poverty meal' from the 80s was just rice, a can of cream of mushroom soup, and a handful of frozen peas.
He said he still makes it sometimes because it costs about $2.50 total and reminds him of getting by, so what's your own version of a cheap meal that's stuck around?

My wife still makes our old "depression pasta" from our first apartment, just noodles, a can of stewed tomatoes, and whatever cheese was on sale.

My buddy from college still swears by his "struggle stir fry." He'd grab the cheapest bag of frozen mixed veggies, a single chicken thigh he'd slice super thin, and this awful soy sauce packet from a takeout place he saved. He fries it all up in a dented pan he's had since dorm days. Says it tastes like making rent that first year out of school.

People get real poetic about their broke food. It's just some stuff you threw in a pot because you had no money. My version was a can of beans dumped over toast. I still eat it because it's fast, not for the memories. Calling it a "struggle stir fry" or saying it "tastes like making rent" is a bit much. It's just dinner from when you were poor.
