My pressure cooker gasket gave up mid-dinner last night - now I'm stuck debating whether to fix it or start fresh
I was making a big batch of black bean soup, the kind that stretches for days on $15 total. Around the 20 minute mark, steam started hissing out the sides and the lid wouldn't seal... turns out the rubber gasket just cracked after 4 years of heavy use. I could order a $8 replacement gasket online, or I could scrap the whole thing and pick up a newer model at the thrift store for $20. Which way do you guys lean when a cheap part fails on your main budget cooker?

Replace the gasket for sure, don't scrap the whole cooker over 8 bucks. The thrift store model is a gamble - could be worn out inside or missing parts you don't know about yet. You already know this one works perfect with a fresh seal, why roll the dice on a random used one? Plus that $20 thrift find might need its own new gasket too, so you're not really saving money in the long run. Fix what you got, it's the smarter move.

Take that gasket money and run with it... it's like how people toss a whole toaster over a $3 spring but the old one's got the perfect shade setting you'll never find again.
