My neighbor Frank showed me his trick for a $4 dinner after I complained about grocery prices.

He pulled a bag of dried lentils from his pantry, pointed at his pressure cooker, and said, 'This thing and a 99-cent onion make a pot of soup that feeds me for three days.'

Ever try that with a can of tomatoes instead?

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I tried to make chili with only canned tomatoes and no paste. It turned into this weird, watery soup (I had to drain like three cans to get it right). Ended up adding a ton of beans just to give it some body.

Ha, I know exactly what you mean! That watery soup is the worst. Tomatoes alone just don't have that thick, rich texture you need for chili. You end up throwing in half a bag of cornmeal or something just to soak up the juice. I'd rather just start with paste and add water than the other way around. Makes you wonder why they even sell those plain cans sometimes.
