My mom mentioned she stretches a $9 chicken into 5 dinners, so I asked her to show me
I called my mom in Phoenix on Sunday to complain about my grocery bill hitting $140 a week for two people, and she laughed and said she feeds herself for about $35. She walked me through a whole chicken she buys for $9 at Fry's, roasting it Sunday, then using the bones for stock and the leftover meat for soup, tacos, and a rice dish through Friday. I tried it this week and got four solid meals plus two quarts of stock out of one bird, which I never would have thought possible. The part that got me was how much of my bill was just meat I was buying without any plan. Does anyone else have a parent or grandparent whose old tricks turned out to be way smarter than the stuff I see online?
