My big mistake buying bulk rice in a humid climate
I live in Houston and thought I'd save big by getting a 50 pound bag of rice from the restaurant supply store. It was only $28 compared to the $1.50 per pound bags at the grocery. But after about 3 weeks, I opened the bin and found little weevils crawling all over the top layer. I tried freezing a portion but the damage was done and I ended up throwing almost 40 pounds of rice in the trash. Has anyone else tried storing bulk grains in a place with high humidity and actually had it work out?

Man I learned this same lesson the hard way in Florida. 50 pound bag of jasmine rice, weevils showed up in like two weeks. Now I just stick to the smaller bags and deal with the price.

Oh man @oscarb71, "learned the same lesson the hard way in Florida" really gets me because I bet the humidity there is basically a weevil all-you-can-eat buffet. I made the same mistake with a giant bag of basmati from Costco and ended up with little bugs floating in my cooking pot before I even noticed. Now I keep everything in those big plastic bins with the snap lids and check it every few days like a crazy person. But honestly you're right, sometimes the smaller bags are worth the extra cash just to not have a pantry full of uninvited guests.
