My big 'aha' moment with dried beans
For YEARS I thought canned beans were the only cheap way to go. Then my friend in Phoenix showed me her pantry with bags of dried ones, and I did the math. A 2 pound bag of dried black beans costs like $2.50 and makes the same amount as over 6 cans. I was wasting so much money. Anyone have other pantry staples that are way cheaper dried?

Your math is a little off, a two pound bag of dried beans actually cooks up to equal about six 15-ounce cans, not over six. Still a huge savings though.

Yeah @miab87, and that's still a crazy good deal.

The math on lentils is even more dramatic. A one pound bag of dried green lentils costs about a dollar fifty. That cooks up to over seven cups, which is like four cans worth. They don't even need soaking, just a quick rinse and about twenty minutes to simmer. The texture is so much better than the mushy canned kind.
