My aunt told me to stop buying pre-shredded cheese to save money and she was totally right

I used to spend $4 on a bag of shredded cheddar every week at the Kroger in Austin. She said buy a block for $2.50 instead and shred it myself. After 3 months I saved about $18 and the cheese melts way better on my tacos. Has anyone else noticed pre-shredded stuff has that powdery coating that ruins the texture?

Wait have you tried shredding a whole block at once and freezing it? That was the game changer for me tbh. I spent like 20 minutes once a month shredding 3-4 blocks and just toss the bags in the freezer. No more powdery coating nonsense and the frozen shreds still melt great straight from frozen into soups or on nachos. The pre-shredded stuff definitely has cellulose or starch to stop clumping and it messes with the fat content so it never gets that perfect gooey stretch. Plus I found out you can save even more by buying the big 2lb blocks at Costco or Sam's Club for like $5 lol.

Oh man I totally get that. I tried doing a big batch of shredded cheese myself after getting sick of the weird powdery stuff. Only problem for me was I didn't have a food processor so I just used a box grater and my hand got so cramped halfway through the second block I had to take a break and watch like ten minutes of TV before finishing. But the payoff was real because the frozen shreds actually did melt way better on my tacos and stuff. I also found out you can freeze smaller bags for different uses like one for pizza one for casseroles, just label them with a marker so you don't mix up mozzarella and cheddar like I did once.
