Last Tuesday my cheap rice cooker finally gave out after 4 years

I was making dinner and it just stopped mid-cycle with a weird smell. Turned out the bottom heating element had rusted through from all the steam over time. I always thought spending $15 on it was a win, but now I'm looking at a $40 model that has a separate steaming tray. Has anyone else had a rice cooker fail like that or am I just unlucky?

Get yourself a better one before that cheap thing catches fire, seriously. Four years out of a $15 cooker is actually a miracle, you got way more than you paid for. That weird smell was probably the ghost of cooked rice past haunting your kitchen. The $40 one with the steamer tray is worth it, I had a cheap one die on me too and replaced it with a mid-range model that's still kicking five years later.

Yeah the ghost of cooked rice past got me, my old one did the exact same thing before it died.

You think that smell was bad enough to wake the dead? Four years for $15 is solid though, you got your money's worth.
