I used to buy lunch every day at work, now I bring rice and beans and my wallet finally stopped crying
Three years ago I was spending $11 a day at the sandwich place near my office in Dayton, which came out to about $220 a month, and I never thought twice about it. Then my car needed a $900 repair and I had nothing saved, so I started cooking a big pot of rice and beans on Sunday nights and portioning it into five containers. It is boring and my coworkers tease me about it, but that one change freed up enough cash to cover the repair in four months. The weird part is I actually feel better in the afternoons now instead of crashing at 2pm like I used to. Has anyone else made a switch like this and stuck with it long term, or do you get sick of eating the same thing by Wednesday?
Rice and beans don't have to be boring if you switch up the seasoning each week, like taco spices one week then curry the next, so you're using the same cheap base but it tastes different. Frozen veggies mixed in also help a lot and they cost almost nothing. Been doing this for two years now and the trick is cooking two smaller pots instead of one giant one so it stays interesting past Wednesday.
