I finally stopped buying those $4 bagged salad mixes

My neighbor told me I was wasting money on bagged salads that go bad in 2 days. She showed me how she buys a head of romaine for $1.50 and it lasts a whole week in the fridge with a paper towel. I switched over last month and now I'm saving about $10 a week on lunches. Has anyone else made that switch and found a trick to keep lettuce fresh even longer?

My mother in law wraps hers in a damp tea towel, I tried it and was shocked.

Have you tried flipping the towel halfway through? Works for me.

That paper towel trick really is a game changer. I can't believe it took me this long to figure it out, haha. But you know what my big problem was before the switch? Not the lettuce going bad, but actually eating it all before the head started looking sad. I got one of those big plastic containers with the little grate in the bottom for drainage. I line the bottom with a dry paper towel, put the whole washed head in there, and put the lid on loose so it can breathe a little. The towel catches any extra moisture and I just swap it out every few days. That thing lasts me almost two weeks sometimes.
