I finally broke my cheap chef knife trying to cut a butternut squash
Everyone says go for the cheap Kiwi brand knives, but mine snapped right at the handle last Tuesday when I was prepping dinner. I don't get how people swear by these when a $8 squash did it in. Any recommendations for a knife under $25 that can handle tough squash without breaking?

Why would anyone spend 25 bucks on a knife when you can just get a better cutting technique? That squash probably wasn't stable on the board, and you twisted the blade forcing it through. I've had a Kiwi knife for three years now, still sharp, and I cut through acorn squash every couple weeks by tapping the spine with a mallet instead of muscling it.

Honestly, "tapping the spine with a mallet" sounds like you're building a birdhouse, not making dinner. But hey, if your Kiwi knife and a hammer get the job done, more power to ya.

Oh man, you totally nailed it with the birdhouse comparison! That visual is spot on. I mean, if you're reaching for a mallet to get through dinner, how is that different from having to use a hammer to open a pickle jar? The whole point of a good knife should be that it does the heavy lifting for you, not that you need extra tools to force it. I get that some people are all about that "make it work" mentality, but it feels like they're missing the point of having a sharp blade. Why not just spend a little more upfront and avoid the whole toolbox approach to cooking?
