Had to choose between cheap ground beef or mushroom tacos last night
I was staring down $4.99 a pound for ground beef at the store versus a $2.69 pack of mushrooms. Decided to go with the mushrooms and make mushroom tacos since it was half the price. Seasoned them with cumin and chili powder, threw in some onions and a can of black beans for $0.79. Guess what? They were actually filling and I didn't miss the meat at all. I've got leftovers for lunch today too which is a bonus. Anyone else try swapping out meat for cheaper stuff like mushrooms or lentils?

Last week I swapped ground turkey for a can of lentils in my spaghetti sauce and honestly couldn't tell the difference. The lentils gave it that same hearty texture and I saved about four bucks. Definitely gonna try mushroom tacos now after reading this.

Oh man, I gotta jump in here. I tried the whole mushroom taco thing after hearing about it and there's one thing nobody tells you. You really gotta squeeze the moisture out of the mushrooms after you cook them or they turn the whole taco into a soggy mess. Brown them hard in a hot pan, get all that water out, then season them. They're good though, honestly way better than I expected for a meat replacement. Have you tried adding some smoked paprika to them?
