A bag of beans from my thrifty days still gives me pause
Bean soup was my go-to cheap meal back in my apartment days. I never thought about where the beans came from. Now, I know more about farm worker struggles. There was a winter I bought beans from a brand with bad farmer treatment. My budget forced my hand, but it felt wrong. I needed to feed myself, so I did it. These days, I look for fair trade options when I can. It's a small change, but it matters to me.

A film on migrant workers in California really hit me hard. I used to grab whatever was on sale at the store, no questions asked. But seeing those conditions made me rethink every purchase. Now I check labels for fair trade marks, even if it costs more. It's not always easy, but knowing I'm not supporting bad treatment helps. I get why people buy cheap out of necessity, though.
