Watched a guy at the Home Depot in Nashua use a butter knife to pop the old grout off his shower floor instead of buying a grout saw for $8.

He said he was saving up for a new toilet and that butter knife worked better than the cheap plastic grout saw I wasted $4 on last week, has anyone else found random kitchen tools that outperform the real thing?

My mom used a flathead screwdriver for tile work and swore by it.

Seven times out of ten a chisel from a hardware store does a cleaner job on tile than a flathead screwdriver ever could, because the screwdriver's tip is ground at a different angle for turning screws not for scoring ceramic. A proper tile scoring tool (like a 3/8 inch carbide scribe) costs under 15 bucks and gives you straight lines without chipping the glaze. My point is @the_jessica, your mom's trick works fine in a pinch but it's like using a rock when a hammer is right there on the shelf.
