That one comment at the flea market made me check every tag I own
I was haggling for a secondhand jacket last Saturday and the seller, some older guy running a stall in Austin, picked up this pair of boots I was about to buy. He said, 'Son, that brand retired in 2003, this is a knockoff,' and just walked off. I spent 20 minutes checking the stitching and zippers myself, sure enough he was right. Now I'm second guessing every thrift find I've grabbed in the last 5 years, and I'm wondering how many times I paid $30 for stuff worth $8. Has anyone else gotten a random tip from a stranger that totally changed how they shop secondhand?

Wearing a knockoff for a couple years doesn't really change anything, it still does the same job as the real thing. The guy was probably just showing off his knowledge more than saving you money. Paying $30 for a jacket that keeps you warm is still $30 well spent, regardless of what the tag says.
