Stop tossing out your glass jars with the lids still on - here's why I learned the hard way
I used to just rinse out pasta sauce jars and throw them in the recycling bin with the metal lid screwed on tight. My recycling hauler in Durham sent me a notice saying I was contaminating their load and almost got my bin dropped. Apparently those lids have a different melting point than the glass. If they get through the sorting process they can ruin entire batches of recycled glass. The hauler said I should either toss the lid separately or crush the jar so the lid falls off. I had no idea. Is this just my local facility being picky or is this a standard thing everywhere?

Yeah "just screw the lids back on like everyone else does" - that's exactly what I thought. But my buddy Dave works at a recycling center. He told me about a batch that got wrecked. Someone tossed a jar with the lid on. The lid melted into the glass and ruined like a whole pallet. They had to scrap everything. So yeah your hauler is telling the truth. It's not just them being picky. That lid thing can really screw up the process.
