Shoutout to the $2 grocery outlet meat bin, where I buy dinner instead of the $15 app now
Back in 2019 I was paying $9.99 a month for one of those meal kit apps and felt so proud of myself for cooking at home, even though the box came with tiny portions and a pile of plastic. Now I hit the meat bin at the grocery outlet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when they mark down anything close to the sell by date, and last week I walked out with two pounds of chicken thighs and a pork shoulder for $6.40 total. I freeze what I will not use in two days, and honestly half the stuff in that bin has another three or four days on it if you cook it right. The trick is going early, like before 10am, since the good cuts vanish by noon and you are left with mystery sausage. I used to think discount meat was sketchy, but a butcher at the ShopRite in Passaic showed me how to check the color and smell and I have not gotten sick once in two years. My grocery bill went from $340 a month down to around $190 and I eat better than I did on the app. Anyone else have a day or time that works best for their store's markdowns, or is it just a crapshoot everywhere?
