Rant: my $20 toaster caught fire and I fixed it with a paperclip

I was making toast in my apartment kitchen last Tuesday when smoke started pouring out the slots, so I unplugged it, bent a paperclip to clean out the crumb tray that I never emptied, and now it works fine but I'm still side-eyeing it every morning, has anyone else had a small appliance go rogue like that and did you just keep using it?

side-eyeing it every morning" is exactly the right move. You cleaned out the crumb tray once, so how bad is the crust buildup in the actual slots? I'd pop the thing open and check before you trust it again.

Stop overthinking it. Toasters are fine until they're not.
