I thought $18 for a washable furnace filter was a scam, then I checked my old one after 2 winters
I always bought the $3 fiberglass ones and swapped them out every couple of months, but a guy at the hardware store in Spokane talked me into trying a washable one for $18 last fall. Pulled it out this morning, rinsed it in the sink, and the crud that came off was nasty, plus I haven't bought a single filter since. For folks who run their heat 5 or 6 months straight, do you wash yours monthly or just wait until the airflow feels weak?
How bad does your airflow actually get before you notice? I ask because I ran the same washable one for two winters and started rinsing it every month, and the difference was real. By week four the pleats were caked with that gray fuzz and dust, and my furnace was running longer to hit the same temp. Once I switched to monthly rinses, the house warmed up faster and my gas bill dropped a bit. Waiting for weak airflow is too late in my book, that means it was already choked for weeks. Takes two minutes in the sink, so why not just do it on the first of the month and be done?
