I picked a $20 used rice cooker over a $80 Instant Pot and here's what happened

I was living on my own for the first time in Austin and needed to cook, but money was tight. My roommate said the Instant Pot was the only way to go, but I found a beat up rice cooker at a thrift store for $20. It's been 8 months now and I use it for rice, steamed veggies, even oatmeal. Not as fancy as the Instant Pot, but it does the job and I saved $60. Has anyone else made a cheap kitchen tool work way beyond what it was meant for?

Good for you, seriously. I have a $15 rice cooker from a garage sale that has somehow survived five moves and still makes perfect rice every time (plus I've made soup in it, which felt like a huge win). It's amazing what a simple appliance can do when you just let it do its thing.

Five moves with a $15 garage sale rice cooker still going strong? That's wild, man. I honestly can't believe it held up through all that shuffling, those things usually get dented or the handle snaps off after one move in my experience. You lucked out big time, or maybe those old garage sale models were built different.
