Appreciation post: the $4 potato masher from Goodwill that fixed my $400 disposal jam
My kitchen sink backed up last Monday and the guy on the phone quoted me $180 just to come look at it. Before I paid that I watched a 6 minute video and pulled a wad of rice and celery strings out of the trap with my bare hands, which took 20 minutes and zero dollars. The next day I found a metal potato masher at the Goodwill on 5th for $4 and now I use it to push food down the drain instead of my fingers. Not fancy, but my disposal has not jammed in 3 weeks. Has anyone else found a cheap kitchen tool that does a job it was not made for?

Oh boy, careful with that masher trick! A disposal is not a trash can, and pushing food down just packs it in tighter instead of letting water flush it through. Those blades need water running the whole time to carry stuff away, so shoving rice or celery strings down with a masher can actually make the jam worse later. You got lucky your trap was easy to reach, but a lot of folks end up paying way more than that $180 quote once the clog moves deeper into the pipe. The six minute video and the bare hands part was smart though, that is the real win here.
