Vent: The old head on my crew in Baltimore said to quit tapping bricks with the trowel handle, and I finally get why
I was setting a course on a 90 degree day last month and kept tapping each brick down with my handle to seat it in the mortar, which is how I was taught back in my first gig. He told me that tap beats the mud down and squeezes the water out, so the bond never sets right, and to just press and wiggle it into place instead. Anyone else's crew still tapping, or did y'all switch over too?
Did you notice the mortar gets that chalky look on top when guys tap too much? I used to swear by the tap because it felt like I was locking it in tight, but once I watched a wall I built that way get torn out, the bricks were barely gripping. Now I just press and wiggle, and the bond feels way more solid when it sets.
