Swapped from lime mortar to type N on a big job in New Haven last month

Always used lime mortar for restoration work because that's what the old timers taught me, but this 1880s brownstone was so far gone we needed something stronger to hold the new brick. I was worried about cracking but the Type N actually matched the soft brick better and I didn't have to wait as long for it to set. Has anyone else made this switch and regretted it or had it work out fine?

It reminds me of how people swap out old tools for new ones expecting trouble but end up surprised when the modern option just works better for the situation. Sometimes the rules we learned were right for their time but not for every job that comes along.

Wish my cooking tool swaps worked out half as smooth.
