Serious question, do you guys always use a line block for soldier courses?
I was laying a soldier course for a window opening on a house in Tempe last week. The foreman wanted me to just use a level and a story pole, but I insisted on setting up a line block and running a string. It added maybe 20 minutes to the setup. The course went in perfectly straight, but he said it was overkill for a 4-foot span. What's your standard practice for something like that?

Cheap insurance" is right, @mark723 nailed it. But your foreman saying it's overkill for a 4-foot span misses the point. Is his argument that a level can't drift over multiple bricks? A string line gives you one constant reference for the whole run, not just checking each brick one by one. That 20 minutes saves you from any cumulative error.
