PSA: Noticed a big difference after switching my mortar mix on a small garage project
I've been laying brick for about 4 years now, mostly residential stuff. Last week I had to do a small retaining wall around a buddy's garage in Oak Park. Normally I just grab the same pre-mixed stuff from the big box store, but I decided to try a Type N mix with some lime added. I mean, I read about it online but never bothered. After about 3 days when it cured, the color was way more consistent and the joints felt tighter, less crumbly. The old mix always left a kinda dusty look no matter how much I cleaned it. I don't know if it's just placebo or what, but I'm thinking about switching for good on my next job. Has anyone else noticed a real difference messing with their mix ratios for smaller walls?

Question whether it's really that serious for a small garage wall, @finleycooper. Are we building bridges here or just stacking bricks for a buddy's backyard?

Pre-mixed stuff is fine for speed but you never really know what youre getting with the sand blend. Adding lime is the move. Ive been doing that for years on all my small walls and fire pits. The lime keeps the mortar from drying out too fast and gives it that almost creamy texture when you work it. Also try wet curing it with a spray bottle and plastic sheeting for a few days. That locks the color in even more.
