PSA: I switched from a string line to a laser level on my 40 foot wall and it cost me half a day
Everyone in my crew swears by the laser level for long walls but I went back to a string line last month on a garage in Fresno. The laser kept drifting every time the sun hit it, so my courses on the 40 foot run were off by almost 3/8 of an inch at the end. I pulled the whole face down, reset with a string, and finished the wall in 6 hours with no callbacks. The laser is great for indoors or short runs under 15 feet, but for anything long and sunny I will take a $12 line and a couple of clamps every time. My foreman still thinks I am stuck in the past, but he has not had to rebuild a wall yet. What do you all use for long exterior runs when the heat is messing with your gear?
Watched a buddy try the same thing on a long fence line last summer and the laser walked on him bad once the sun got high. He ended up stringing it after lunch and finished fine, just lost a few hours like you did. Funny how the old cheap way still wins when the sun is beating down.
