Old timer at the supply yard told me my mortar was too wet and I argued for 10 minutes before trying it his way

I always mixed my mortar so it was pretty loose, thought it was easier to spread. This guy, must have been 70 years in the trade, watched me slapping it on and just shook his head. Said I was washing the strength out and making the bricks float. Told me to mix it stiff like peanut butter. I thought he was full of it. Next job I tried it his way on one wall. That wall? Straight as an arrow and the joints held perfect. No more sagging. Has anyone else had an old hand change how they mix and it actually worked better?
