Old timer at the supply yard made me redo my mortar mix

Been laying brick for about 8 years and thought I had my mud down pat. This guy Jim at the local yard in Wichita watched me load up and just said "son, your joints are gonna crack in a year" because I was running too much water. I switched to a 3-1-1 ratio with lime and started letting it slake for 10 minutes before using it. Anyone else had someone call them out on basic mix technique?

@jessica_miller I get what you're saying about the sand being first but in the field around here old timers like Jim say it the way they've always said it. 3-1-1 is just shorthand for parts, nobody means you're loading the truck with 3 buckets of sand and 1 of cement and counting lime as the third number. Your mix is the same thing just written different. I've been doing it Jim's way for a few months now and my joints are holding way better in this Kansas weather. The slaking part is key too, you gotta let that lime soak in.

Sorry but it's 3 sand 1 cement 1 lime, not 3-1-1.
