I finally quit buttering my mortar beds after a guy on a job in Gary set me straight
I used to slop mortar on the block and smash it down, figured it was faster that way. Last week this older mason named Ray watched me set about 15 blocks on a wall in Gary and then asked me to pull one back up and look at the bed. The mud was only touching in a couple spots, he said "you're gluing two bricks together with a dab of peanut butter," and then showed me how he rolls the block into a full furrow so it squishes out both sides. I've been doing it his way since and my head joints come out way tighter with less mud on the ground, so now I want to know if anybody else got this same talk or did y'all figure it out on your own?
