Hot take: I chose a mud mixer over a drill for my bricklaying mortar last month and it worked way better.

Everyone at the supply yard said I was crazy for using a mixer instead of my trusty corded drill, but after 3 days of heavy rain on a job in Richmond, the mud mixer gave me a smoother batch that didn't run, has anyone else tried this?

Have you noticed how sometimes the "wrong" tool just makes more sense for the actual job? It's like how I always reach for a flathead screwdriver to pry open paint cans even though everyone says use the proper tool. We get so stuck on what's supposed to be right that we forget about what actually works in the moment. Your muddy batch story proves that, sometimes the old-school method beats the fancy one hands down.

I get what you're saying about the flathead screwdriver thing, I do that too sometimes for opening stuff. But I gotta push back a little on the whole "wrong tool works better" idea. See, the problem with grabbing a flathead for a paint can is you're risking bending the lid or chipping the screwdriver tip, and then you've got a mess on your hands. A proper paint can opener costs like a dollar and does it clean every time without ruining your tools. Same with that muddy batch story - sure the old method got it done, but the fancy one probably would've been faster and less messy if you figured out the right settings for your material. I just think we romanticize the struggle sometimes when really the right tool is the right tool for a reason.

Jesse, I disagree that a proper tool always beats a makeshift one since sometimes your hand knows what works better than the instructions do.
