Green mortar vs lime mortar, my old man was right

I spent 6 years mixing green mortar for everything, repointing old brick in Cincinnati and all. Picked up a job on a 1920s church and the foreman made me switch to lime putty for the soft brick. First freeze-thaw cycle this spring, the lime joints flexed where my rigid patches would have cracked. That church job convinced me, now I ask about the building age before I mix anything. Anyone else run into customers who insist on Type S for historical work?
