Catching stares from the sidewalk when I'm on a job
People stop and watch me work. It's like they're seeing mortar mixed for the first time. Makes me think this trade is fading from view.

Maybe it's not that the trade is fading, idk, but people just don't see it every day. I mean, lots of hands-on jobs are still around, but they happen out of sight now. When folks see it in public, it's kinda new to them, like watching a craft. It's like how people will stop to watch a street performer or an artist painting. The skills are still needed, they just aren't as common to spot in daily life. Don't let the stares make you think your work isn't important.

Honestly used to think trades were just dying out slowly. But you're right, and what jade738 said about online followings proves it. People aren't used to seeing a welder fix a gate or a mason repair a wall right in front of them anymore. It becomes a show because it's rare to catch it live, not because the skill is gone. Makes the stares way less annoying when you see it that way.

Read something about tradespeople getting big followings online just filming their normal work day. Guess seeing it up close still feels special even if the jobs never went away.
