A foreman in Gary, Indiana said something about mortar that changed how I lay block
Last Tuesday I was on a job in Gary, Indiana and the foreman, Dave, watched me butter a block and said, 'You're mixing for looks, not for grab.' He meant my mortar was too wet. I had been adding water all summer so it would spread easier and my walls still passed, but he showed me how a stiffer mix holds the block without sliding. Now I want to know, how do you all judge the right mix by feel, or do you go by the bag directions every time?
