Ruined 4 pounds of green beans in my garage because I trusted a $9 thermometer
Back in April I got a wild hair and decided to roast in my garage in Columbus instead of the back porch, and I used this cheap dial thermometer I picked up at a hardware store for 9 bucks. It read 400F when my beans were actually sitting at about 480F, so I scorched 4 pounds of Guatemalan before I caught the smell. Bought a proper probe thermometer the next day and my roasts have been dead on since. Anyone else get burned by trusting a cheap gauge, and what are you using to check yours?
The "trusted a $9 thermometer" line got me because I did the exact same thing with a cheap one from the hardware store and my first batch came out tasting like burnt toast and regret. Mine read a solid 100 degrees low so I kept cranking the heat thinking I was way under, and by the time the smoke rolled out I knew it was over. I just stood there in my driveway holding a pound of wasted beans and questioning every choice I've ever made. Now I use a probe I checked in boiling water first because I refuse to get fooled twice. Lesson learned the hard way, same as you.
