Read that green coffee loses half its weight during roasting, weighed my own batch to check
I was flipping through a roasting guide last Tuesday and it said green beans drop about 15 to 20 percent of their weight once they hit first crack. That seemed low to me, so I weighed out 300 grams of a Guatemalan I got from a co-op in Boulder and roasted it to a medium level. The beans came off the scale at 252 grams, which lines up almost exactly with an 18 percent loss. I always knew moisture was leaving the beans but seeing the number on my own kitchen scale made it real. Does anyone track their weight loss per batch, or do you just eyeball it until the color looks right?
Been weighing every batch since I scorched a pound of Sumatra last year, the scale tells you way more than your eyes do. 18 percent is right in the normal range for a medium roast, so your numbers look solid. I write the green weight and roasted weight on a piece of tape on the bag, takes two seconds and saves you from guessing later.
