Finally figured out I was starving my starter for 6 months
I've been feeding my sourdough starter the same way since I started baking last winter, and it always looked kinda sad and bubbly but never really doubled. Last Tuesday I was at my friend's house and she showed me how she keeps hers on the counter and feeds it a 1:2:2 ratio instead of equal parts flour and water like I was doing. Lightbulb moment. I went home, weighed out 30g of my starter and gave it 60g flour and 60g water instead of my usual 50/50 split. It doubled in 4 hours for the first time ever. I felt like such a dope for not realizing it needed more food that whole time. Has anyone else been feeding theirs wrong for way too long without knowing?

That "lightbulb moment" line hit home for me. I was the same way, thought equal parts was the only way to go for months until someone broke it down for me. Makes total sense now, extra food wakes it right up. How long did it take your friend to show you the right way?
